Design & Engineering Manufacturing About Burton Industries Contact

Our History

Family-owned, Service-focused and Values-driven

Burton Industries was started in 1978 by Edward Leman and James Treiterer, with a small operation in New Berlin, WI. Ed’s background was manufacturing and Jim had a background in aerospace test engineering. The Company helped pioneer the introduction of automotive electronics in its initial contract manufacturing projects. It was not unusual to complete an order late at night or early in the morning and then jump in the car and drive 5-6 hours to make the delivery to the customer.

By the early 1980s, Burton Industries was helping define the contract manufacturing business model and had moved to a larger facility in Minocqua, WI. The commitment to exceptional service and quality for customers that started with a few guys focused on doing whatever it took to build a business became the corporate culture as the Company grew. We believed in words like partnership and adding value before they become industry buzzwords in the 90s. We were a leader in helping to change the business model from built-to-print board stuffing using consigned components, to the turnkey, engineering-intensive model seen today. We supplied total solutions for our customers, at a time when there weren’t many companies that could do much more than stuff boards.

Around 1992, we built a new 6,500 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Hazelhurst, WI and added what was then known as SMD assembly. In 1998, we opened a 10,000 sq. ft. manufacturing operation in Ironwood, MI, focused mainly on SMD assembly. Operational control of the Company passed to Gary Burnett, Sr. in 1997 and Mark Leman also joined that year. In 2006/2007, we expanded the Ironwood, MI facility to 20K sq. ft. to expand our box build capabilities and other value-added services, such as test and lean manufacturing activities. In 2010/2011 we laid the foundation for expanded design and engineering services, began industry specific quality certification and established the WIN alliance of custom component suppliers to better serve the needs of our customers looking for a total solution.

In 2013, we celebrated our 35th anniversary, thanks to the support of customers who trust us, associates who enjoy working here and suppliers who are as committed to service as we are. What makes us different? It’s pretty simple. We want to make our customers’ lives easier. We’ve been following that formula for over three decades and it has worked for us, because it works for our customers. Contact us and let’s discuss whether or not the Burton difference will work for your company. We won’t dazzle you with buzzwords, we will just show you what a true manufacturing partner can mean to you and improve your life, your business and your bottom line.
